Field note · Engineered components
From design-in to series production
A Swiss maker of customer-specific components wins many design-in projects. Only some reach volume. Which ones deserve scarce engineering capacity?
The situation
A Swiss manufacturer of engineered, customer-specific components works with OEMs in medical, industrial and mobility markets. Every new customer application is partly bespoke, and the company wins more design-in projects than it can take to series production with full attention.
Some applications become large, long-running series. Many stall after prototypes. Engineering capacity, qualification effort and tooling are finite.
The decision that matters
At each step from prototype to series, leadership decides which applications receive engineering hours, qualification resources and production capacity. Today that call leans heavily on customer enthusiasm and the instinct of a few experienced account managers.
How we approach it
For every application in the pipeline, AI brings together what the company already knows but rarely sees in one place: how comparable past applications progressed and where they stalled, the technical and qualification constraints, the customer's own signals and the economics of volume.
At each gate, the programme owner receives a prepared view of the realistic path to series, the open choices and what each option would consume. The decision stays with the owner. The engineering, CRM and ERP systems stay exactly as they are.
Impact
The approach targets a single-digit million improvement in annual revenue, by moving more of the right applications into series production sooner.
